Hebrews 4:12-13 (ESV) 12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
My oldest daughter knows everything. It is truly a marvel of Creation that at the tender age of 10, almost 11 at the time of writing this, she is knowledgeable about all things seen and unseen! “Dad, I know that already!” She must truly possess the divine gift of knowledge that has manifested itself in her preteen years!
Assuming we are all done rolling our eyes and chuckling at the joys of parenthood, this exact scenario is humorously similar to our relationship of God in relation to “what we know.” One of the key attributes of God is His Omniscience. That is, an innate ability to know all things about all things for all things. Imagine you order furniture from Ikea. Now imagine not only do you know how to pronounce its name (debatable), but without even looking at the manual you know how to build that shelf flawlessly without leaving any extra parts. This might be an impressive feat to some yet pales horribly in comparison to the depth of God’s knowledge of things.
You see, if we use that example of the shelf…God doesn’t merely know how to build it. He knows the very lifecycle of every particle and atom for all the parts all the way back to when the wood they were made out of was a seed. From when that seed wasn’t even formed on its maternal tree. When that maternal tree hadn’t even taken root…and so on and so on for eons across all of eternity past.
If we look at the Scripture above today, we see a very humbling and sobering reminder. God’s omniscience also applies so fully to us in our human and flawed states. We are judged by His Word and our faith in His Son as revealed to us. We will give account for everything we have done, both righteous or sinful. Yet, God already knew. Every work for the Kingdom you have done, are doing or will do…He knew before Creation. Every sin that you commit in your life…He knew of it long before you were born. He looks upon you and sees you to your very soul.
To some this truth about God my illicit feelings of trepidation and borderline fear. Remember, a healthy fear of God is reverence…not a fear of consequence. That type of fear is of Satan. This knowledge that God does not merely possess, but embodies, is one of the most powerful comforts we can meditate on! He knows…I want you to say that out loud right now. Put your book down, or whatever you’re reading this on, and say it out loud. “God you know!”
Your failures…He knows. What you’re grieving…He knows. How you’re going to make the rent…He knows. How you’re going to handle that hard discussion with a family member…He knows. When you want to tell Him you love Him…He knows. When you’re at the end of yourself, in your absolute dark night of the soul…Christian, He knows.
One of the greatest things we can put our faith in, is that God’s embodiment of truth and knowledge Is so pure it goes beyond our broken state of being. He knows.
Soli Deo Gloria!!!!
