Genesis 1:1-4 (ESV) 1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.
When you think of Eternity…what do you think of? Your first thoughts typically would be about “endless periods of time.” It is a natural thought to arrive to. We often have these sayings, typically at red lights or in the self-checkout, “Man this is taking an eternity!” We often associate “eternity” with time.
This thought is not incorrect. It applies! Yet, what if there was a more deeply rooted element of Eternity that we often overlook? It would be remiss to ever ponder the things of God without going beyond our immediate presuppositions about Him. So, let’s get this one out of the way…yes, without a doubt, all three persons of God have existed before Creation ever began.
Look at the Scripture…at the onset of Creation we see the Holy Spirit “hovering over the face of the waters” of the void Earth. Case closed? That’s it, right?! We solved the concept of eternity in application to the Spirit, yes? You would be wrong!
Look a little further in this Scripture. The very next verse contains one of the most quoted verses from the Bible. “Let there be light.” Then like a divine lightbulb, light itself exists in our creation. What does God say about it? “…the light was good.”
Those two short thoughts extract a more fathomless picture at what being eternal really is. The divine attribute of being Eternal does not merely apply to being timeless. It is true, but there is more. God’s attribute of being eternal is to say He, in all three persons, is limitless in all aspects of who He is. His power…eternal. His love…eternal. His justice…eternal. All that He embodies is purely endless!
In that Scripture we see there is no light. God simply wills it, and light, as we understand anyway, simply exists. In an instant God, through the Holy Spirit, weaves the very laws of physics, biology, chemistry, and mathematics into being for the effect of light. That is a wonderful example of His being eternal. Just when you think it doesn’t go any further down the rabbit hole…look at the tail end of verse 4.
He separated light from the darkness. There is an element of night and day here, but there is something more. Remember, there exist a multitude of examples in Scripture where God refers to Himself as The Light. Recall that the light was thought of as Good! (Another attribute of God.) We aren’t just talking about the ability to see, and then not see. We are talking in this instant about the spiritual implications of God versus no God!
In the absence of God’s Light Eternal, there is a separation from God that leads to Darkness. An abysmal thought! How amazing is it that in His eternal majesty that one of the very first themes in all of Holy Scripture is that there is a promise of presence.
We should be eternally grateful…
Soli Deo Gloria!!!!
