Hebrews 1:10-12 (ESV) 10 And, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; 11 they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment, 12 like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed.[a] But you are the same, and your years will have no end.”

Most husbands will make jokes regarding their wives having more shoes than they have socks. I have an admission to make…I have more pairs of shoes than my wife. Blame thrifting. Many men have a much more logical and functional approach to footwear. You have a pair of tennis shoes. A pair of nice shoes for dinners or church. A pair of NICE shoes for fancy getups. Then you have your boots and your flip flops for the elements. That is usually about it.

Me? I have probably got 3 to 4 pairs of each type. This is not a boast, but just a statement for context. For those who love multiple pairs of shoes, we like to change them to match different looks, moods, outfits, or themes. We change shoes regularly and daily.

We do this with our clothing as well! We do this with meals! We do this with vehicles. We do this with our hobbies. We do this with our jobs. We do this with our friends and people in our lives…and the list goes on and on. You see, we as mankind are constantly in a state of desiring change. Whether we admit it or not, or even realize it or not. There is always something changing. This change typically happens to fulfill a need and/or a want at the time.

We are such fickle creatures compared to our God. Christ, the Son, possesses the same attribute of Immutability as the Father and Spirit. Unchanged and unchanging. What reason does He have to change? We sometimes change to fit temporary needs. God in His fullness needs nothing. We sometimes change to fit our temporary needs. When God wants something, it happens exactly as He wills it to happen.

What need does God have to change? This makes me dwell and meditate so heavily on the person of Christ. When you study His Ministry on earth you see that He is so incredibly intentional about everything. He goes out of His way multiple times to meet specific people and do specific things. It makes me awestruck then to have the understanding that this was all plotted out long before Creation ever happened. Eternally so. God had no need to change the path His footsteps would take Him based on anything that happened here.

Judas was going to betray Him? He had no need to change that. The Jewish people were going to release Barabbas instead of Him? He had no need to change that either. This goes hand in hand with His Sovereignty. He penned the whole “story” of mankind long before this all existed. He is the eternal author. He had no need to change the story.

You ready for the most mind-blowing thing? We bear witness to this through our own lives. You changing your shoes to fit certain needs? Those needs already were penned into the book of life by God. The same goes for every event that ever happened to mankind across history. It all is unchanging as He is unchanging. It all is happening because HE is “happening.” We perceive it as change. He perceives it as “going according to plan.”

How beyond us are You and Your ways oh Lord!

Soli Deo Gloria!!!!
