Genesis 1:1-3 (ESV) 1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
I am a nerd. A giant, big ole, sometimes cringy…nerd. I grew up loving superheroes and comic books and the movies and cartoons and video games they were featured in. Performing feats that were mind blowing! Lifting buildings with their bare hands. Flying at speeds faster than sound! As a young boy it was something that simply settled in me a bit.
So fast forward to this now 41 year old…and yep, you guessed it, still a nerd! One of my favorite characters growing up was The Incredible Hulk! Gigantic, destructive, immeasurably strong! The very power to create sheer destruction and completely obliterate his enemies…and sometimes friends when he entered a blind rage, is flooring.
Yet contrast that to the Scripture above. What do we see in the first three verses in Scripture? In the beginning, God created…He didn’t destroy. This is a profound statement and one we often overlook. God’s omnipotence, that is, His being the absolute pinnacle of power, and eternally so, is so incomprehensible that He is able to create. His very nature in Creation was exactly that…to create. Not to destroy. In His first few acts of creation, we see Him create things that reflect upon Him as our God. He created the heavens (all of space) and the earth. A place that we can exist in.
Prior to this miracle, there was nothing. Space itself didn’t exist! Let that sink in for a bit! A true void is what was there prior to His demonstration of His eternal power over creation itself. Then, He creates light…and there it was. Another statement that often goes over our head. It wasn’t merely that He made things visible…it was that He wove the very fabric of existence in such a way that light itself became a concept! He didn’t simply turn on a cosmic light switch. No…He wrote into being the very essence of the things that make up light. The scientific laws. The way existence reflects and refracts light. How it travels and exists.
Such a dizzying rabbit hole to go down isn’t it? You know what is even more unbelievable? He did so EFFORTLESSLY! His sheer power is simply a part of His being and substance. Just as He embodies all of His attributes…so too does He embody power itself. He IS power incarnate.
So much so that He effortlessly, in a mere moment, willed for such a magnificent thing to exist. In just THREE VERSES. There exists over 31,000 verses in Scripture in total. So, in less than a thousandth of the whole of the Bible, our God did the unthinkable with no effort on His part.
Contrast that to the fantastical and romanticized heroes and villains from comic books…they are laughable at best in the comparison. The very thought of “power” in our finite minds is a pittance in contrast to the eternal and all-powerful God!
The most profound thought about this…is that with all of that infinite immeasurable power, this same God who needs nothing, desires YOU. He demonstrates His glory for His glory alone. Yet He offers it as a gift of comfort and trust that you can know that no power in all of existence can stand in His might in opposition and have any footing. He is the great almighty! And that power fights for you…
Soli Deo Gloria!!!!
