1 Corinthians 2:10-11 (ESV) 10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

My childhood was less than stellar. Abuse of multiple kinds was not uncommon. As a result, this left me with struggles with People Pleasing. In my case, as I call it, Reverse People Pleasing. My struggle was not that I wanted people to approve of me, but rather, that I wanted people to not be displeased with me. This led to periodic issues with honesty when I feared I might be seen as “less than.”

One particular example I can remember was something SO ridiculous looking back. My mother dropped me off at my grandparents’ home one evening. This was my favorite place to spend time as a child. I got there and my mother left. My grandfather asked me a mundane question. “Have you already eaten dinner?” I had already eaten dinner, but I remember still being somewhat hungry. Without even thinking I blurted out, “no I haven’t.” I still wanted a little something to snack on. However, I didn’t want my grandparents to look down on me for wanting that little something extra. Instead of simply telling them I lied…then went and hid behind my grandfather’s rocking chair in his study. Hilariously enough, my grandfather ALWAYS knew to find me there when he knew I was “in trouble.”

He also knew I had eaten…as my mother had already told him she was going to feed me before dropping me off. So he walks into his study, immediately looks behind the chair with a gentle smile and says, “You lied to me.” I remember feeling so much shame, yet strangely unafraid of him in that moment, unlike other scenarios in my home like this one.

The Holy Spirit possesses the same attributes of God as the Father and the Son. We often overlook the Spirit as merely a “helper.” Yet, He is one of the three persons of the Trinity of God! He is eternal and righteous and holy as well. So too is He omniscient! His omniscience works so subtly yet so profoundly. The Holy spirit resides in the hearts of men. Not the physical organ…but your soul…your core. He knows all and convicts the Believers of their sin, prompts them in ways to fulfill God’s Will, and bestows gifts of service.

Look at the Scripture today and read it VERY slowly. Savor each word. There are only 2 verses, yet we can see immense implication here. The Spirit resides within us when we are regenerated by God. He knows us inside and out. Everything we are going to do that God wrote into being? The Spirit knows it fully as well. I think back to my grandfather in his study. He knew EXACTLY where I would be. He knew EXACTLY what to say. He knew EXACTLY how to talk about my dishonesty with him in a way that was confronting the sin yet leaving me actually wanting to make it right. This is a great parallel to how the Spirit operates.

Yet let’s take a step back and notice something at the tail end of Verse 10. The Spirit doesn’t merely know all there is to know about you…He fully understands the very depths of God. Mind-blowing! I get lost in my own neighborhood sometimes (true story) …to be able to fathom the infinitely infinite I cannot even begin to imagine. Yet, the Spirit with that depth of full knowledge of all, aligns in perfect unison with the desire of God to lead people away from their sin, and towards His love. How could we possibly not stand in awe of such a God?

Soli Deo Gloria!!!!
